Valentine’s Day Is for Everyone
As a shop owner, it's no surprise Valentine's Day has been on my mind the past few weeks. Hearts, chubby cherubs, and cute cards are part of the scenery everywhere you look…including right here in the shop.
Specifically, I’ve been thinking about how this time of year so often funnels our attention toward romantic love: the grand gestures, the big reveals, and the anticipation of what might land in our hands on February 14th.
But I keep finding myself curious about something else...
Not just our BIG loves, like spouses and partners, but the many individuals who shape our days in ways that are easy to overlook and impossible to replace.
Love lives in the everyday
Love shows up when the mail carrier tucks a package safely out of the rain. Love peeks in when your coffee barista remembers your order. Love lingers when someone holds the door, smiles at your dog, or asks how your day really is.
Here in Charleston, one of the places that holds so much of my heart is Hampton Park. I walk there often to breathe, to think, or just to notice how the light moves through the trees. Every time I’m there, I’m struck by how thoughtfully it’s cared for.
This Valentine’s Day, I'm writing a love letter to the volunteers and caretakers who tend that space. I want to acknowledge the care, effort, and attention that make the park such a gift to the community. Don't I love that space? Isn't their love on full display in every flower bed or carefully tended path?
That kind of love feels just as worthy of celebration, doesn’t it? And how many love letters do those volunteers receive, I wonder?
Rethinking how we celebrate
Valentine’s Day can be a moment to share love outward, in ways that feel personal and human (and in ways that are beyond romance).
Maybe it looks like a handwritten note left for a neighbor, or a card mailed to a friend who’s been on your mind. Maybe you'll have a private celebration, with cheerful decorations hung in your home as a reminder that joy doesn’t really need an occasion.
This season, I’m drawn to pieces that help make those gestures easier to share. Valentine’s Day doesn’t belong to one type of love or one kind of relationship.

Love doesn’t have to be reserved for one person or one day. It can be practiced, shared, and passed along.
However you choose to celebrate, I hope it feels generous, warm, and rooted in gratitude. And I know love grows beyond one single act or note, and continues spreading its warmth for far flung reaches of the world. It's incredible how contagious kindness is.
Valentine’s Day is for everyone.
